Scuba Diving Lessons Emphasize Safety First
![]() |
You need to take some scuba diving lessons before you take a diving vacation. Human beings can stay underwater for fairly short periods of time but being underwater is normally a deadly environment for any creature except those that can breathe naturally underwater. Self contained underwater breathing apparatus or SCUBA was developed to overcome this difficulty but even with the correct scuba gear it can be dangerous unless the diver has been properly instructed through scuba diving lessons.
It is always a good idea to take your scuba diving lessons before you go on your diving expedition otherwise you will waste important and limited vacation time paddling around a swimming pool learning what to do. Find a reputable instructor for your scuba diving lessons. Your instructor should be both a certified instructor and very experienced. If possible, get some references from other pupils who have taken scuba diving lessons with this instructor. Any time you spend some time underwater you potentially put your life at risk so it is very important to learn from the best you can find.
Your certified instructor or divemaster will start you off with scuba diving lessons on dry land. All of your lessons will probably take place indoors at a facility with a swimming pool. Your instructor will first familiarize you with all the different parts of your scuba gear and how they all work. The scuba diving lessons will include advice on the dangers of diving, as well as the safety features designed to keep you alive. Make sure you pay attention, because the equipment can save your life and there will be both a written test and a diving test to make sure you have learned what you were taught..
Next you will learn about putting on the scuba equipment and you will learn about adjusting everything to be right for you. The mask, tank, and weight belt will feel very awkward and bulky on land, but will allow you to move almost effortlessly in the water. You will learn how you should breathe through the regulator and how to know when the air tank is almost empty. You will also learn how to go about changing your air tank. You habe learned a great deal by this stage but scuba diving lessons are not yet complete.
Most likely you will get tested on the knowledge you have just learned. Your scuba diving lessons instructor may then require you to put on the scuba gear, enter the pool, and perform a few simple tasks such as swimming pool lengths or retrieving some objects from the bottom of the pool. It may feel a bit pointless but it is important and helps to ensure your safety when you are diving for real. When you dive for real you will be staying underwater in an environment that is normally deadly to humans, with a 3000 psi air tank strapped to your back so take your scuba diving lessons seriously and you will have a fantastic diving experience.
