Diving in the deep sea waters of the Caribbean is fun. Everybody likes to go dive in the coral reefs to see the beautiful fish but they stay away from the dark blue waters. It is true that probably the areas around the reefs are more interesting and less dangerous but there are also great things to see in the open water.

For example, it is impossible for a huge whale shark to come to the reefs. It may get stuck plus there is no food for it there. It must dive deep to get his food made of microscopic algae and organisms. Whale sharks eat something similar to the krill whales eat in the arctic regions.

Giant manta rays and sting rays that you can hitch a ride on do not come to the reefs either, they are deep water animals, and their babies hang out on the reefs. Out there, nothing stands in your way, just the deep blue sea. When you are around the corals you must be careful and stay away from moray eels and zebras which have poisonous spines.

The fishing reel and the string used are also different and special. A normal fishing rod would break under the weight and strain of a four hundred pound fish tugging at it and some of these monsters go beyond that weight. It is not only the weight though they put up a fight that may last for hours on end. It is a grueling process.

Once the fish bites it is a game of strategy, you cannot reel it in immediately. This would be impossible and even dangerous, depending on the fish you have. It is your job to reel it in a little and then let him go off again, reel it in and let him go. It is important that you tire him out before he tires you out. It is a true battle of stamina between the fish and the man.

Open water diving is totally different from diving on the reefs or around them. The currents are not easy to identify and the water is colder. Warm water currents are not easy to detect either. The ocean floor is below at a distance and when you look forward you can see mountain ranges and hills.

This does not mean that you can go as deep as you want in open water. No, with normal scuba gear you can only go the same distance you would near the reefs. It is the immensity f the silent ocean that knocks your socks out and makes you realize how small you are. All the movement and life down there that never makes a sound yet vibrates with so much motion and choreography. These are the things that make you leave the reef for the open ocean.

Deep sea fishing is a great sport. It requires a bit of luck to find your opponent and have him bit on your hook. That is probably the easy part, getting him on the boat can turn into a nightmare if you do not have the strength and patience needed for the fight.
