Great Places to Dive in Africa

by Matthew James

Scuba diving is a very popular activity for people who are island lovers. People who tend to frequent tropical islands also tend to enjoy diving in the water. Scuba diving is a great way to see the treasures of the ocean. Underwater you can observe fish and other sea creatures in their natural habitat and see beautiful colored coral.

There is a myriad collection of scintillating diving sites in Africa and zeroing down to one is inevitable. Each diving site poses its own identity and beneath the surface persona. There are many unique spots to visit in Africa. You can dive on both sides of the continent though a lot of the diving takes place in the Red Sea and off the islands on the eastern coast. To be sure though, no matter where you dive youll find an abundance of sea life.

One great place to dive is in the Aliwal Shoal off the coast of South Africa. The reef is named after a ship that sunk there in the 1800s. You'll find a lot of soft corl and tropical fish here and it's a real popular destination with divers. The Shoal has an abundance of Grey nurse sharks between August and November when the sharks come to mate.

The Sardine Run as popularly known to the locals is idyllic to experience the awe-inspiring sight of dolphins, whales, seals, sharks and game fish. Between Mat and July, each year a large shoal of sardines move in to the coastal waters of Kwa Zulu-Natal and thats how this diving site has acquired its name. This moving fish restaurant and ensuing feeding frenzy is a sight to behold and certainly one of the wildest spectacles to occur anywhere in the world.

For a diving enthusiast, who desires to indulge himself/herself in coral reel diving par excellence along with a fun filled experience of watching huge Mata rays, whale sharks, eels and more, then nowhere else but the Manta coast in Mozambique could dictate and rule the kingdom of diving sites.

Africa has a lot of great places to go diving. Many times people dont go diving here because they just never hear about the excellent diving in the area. Most diving advertisements talk about the south pacific, or Asia, or Australia. They always leave Africa out and hence you get very few tourists here. This makes it a majestic place to dive as youll find pristine wild life here. Dont over look the area the next time you want to dive.
