How to Determine a Wetsuit from a Drysuit
Their names may suggest their differences, but how do they exactly differ from each other? You might be looking for some protective garment for your scuba diving or your snorkeling tour somewhere in the Caribbean or somewhere where the climate is temperate, and you may be faced with the choice of what to pick. You may want to know the difference between the two before finally getting one.
Below are some of their main differences that will help you identify and choose between them.
- If it is made of flexible material, it could be the wetsuit.
Wetsuits and drysuits are made of different materials and thus they differ in flexibility. It is also one of their main differences. Wetsuits are made of a flexile rubber while drysuits are mostly made of nylon. If you have a flexible suit, that is a wetsuit.
- If it is waterproofed, it is the drysuit.
As their names suggest, a drysuit keeps you dry. A wetsuit does not.
● Drysuits are loose while wetsuits are snug.
Wetsuits are fit snugly while drysuits are baggy. These are also in connection with how these suits work. You may find wetsuits more difficult to put on than drysuits.
● When it comes to cost, drysuits are more expensive than wetsuits.
Drysuits are indeed more expensive than wetsuits. Although price is not quite a good determinant if you are looking at a wetsuit or a drysuit, but it can at least give you an idea even by just looking at the price tag.
How does a drysuit work then and what makes it different with how wetsuits work?
Wetsuits protect you from losing body heat while by allowing a thin layer of water to enter into the suit that will serve as the body's insulator. Drysuits on the other hand keep you dry and allow you to wear warm clothes underneath to preserve your body heat.
So when can you use wetsuits, and when can you use drysuits?
When it comes to preserving body heat, drysuits are better, thus they are recommended to be worn in lower temperatures, usually in temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also choose to wear drysuits if you like to stay longer in the water as in scuba diving. In temperatures above that, you can choose from a lot of wetsuit styles and designs.
